Spring with Urrea, Tan, and Walker

 

Two meetings are devoted to Luis Alberto Urrea's The Devil's Highway:

Tuessday, February 9 and Tuesday, March 6.

Both meetings are in Burns Hall, 2243 (Trammel Conference Room).

Since Cody Walker is coming to NWACC to read from his book of poetry, Shuffle and Breakdown, we will not meet officially but will attend his reading on Friday, April 20, at 7pm.

Trethewey's Native Guard

The book club enjoyed Trethewey's Bellocq's Ophelia so much that we decided to meet one more time this semster to discuss another book of her poems, Native Guard. This book, at its most basic, is about slavery and the South. See Native Guard for more insights into her Pulitzer Prize-winning book. 

We will meet Tuesday, November 29 from 12-1 in the Dick Trammel Conference room, BH 2243.

Trethewey's Bellocq's Ophelia

Faculty and students at our inaugural official first meeting on October 27, 2011, discussed Natasha Trethewey's Bellocq's Ophelia, a book of poems about prostitutes in the Storyville section of New Orleans in the early 20^th century. The poems about this section of the city led to talk about women and men, voice and race and culture.

If you missed the meeting and are interested in the book, there's a short prezzi with some of Bellocq's photographs.
